Research Administration offices across the United States utilize social media to reach out to their universities and researchers for relevant various hints, tips, and announcements involving everything- RA. Today we’ll look at a couple of these universities and see how they utilize the different outlets for social media.
Harvard Office of Sponsored Programs
Although Harvard has been an active social media user for quite some time, their Office of Sponsored Programs has just jumped on the Facebook and Twitter train. At the outset, they are using these platforms to reach out to other RA offices and will eventually offer a plethora of research news.
Harvard OSP also has an active blog on their office webpage. A recent posting reminded Research Administrators and PIs of the upcoming GUIRR webinar entitled “Research Arms Race: The Current Health and Future Well-being of the American Research University.” This webinar will focus on the challenges certain U.S. research universities will face due to arguments that institutions are currently caught in a “research arms race.” Harvard OSP has also recently directed their patrons to information regarding Fellowship deadlines, Research Funding specifics for different states, and an overview of the effects that Washington will have on future funding.
VCU’s CHS Proposal Development office has an active blog that is a valuable source of information for its readership. The blog consistently features topics on funding found under “Funding Monday,” as well as miscellaneous and fun pieces under “Fun Friday.” VCU offers guidance on topics such as grant writing, sponsor news, and information on VCU-specific policies.
Brigette Pfister, who administers the VCU blog, was the first participant in our Guest Blogger series, with a submission in July entitled “From Pre-Award to Proposal Development – A Day in the Life.” In the coming weeks, her blog will feature a guest entry written by one of BloggingORA’s administrators!
Eastern Michigan University
EMU hosts a definite “go-to” Twitter for updates on various upcoming application deadlines. They also run a Facebook page that elaborates on each of the deadlines, and offers links to the official pages for each corresponding organization.
Social Media outlets help both our offices and researchers stay up-to-date on the most current information and policies, and we feel that it is important that Universities utilize these tools as much as possible. Thank you Harvard, VCU, EMU, and the many others that help to keep us all in-sync in the research administration world!
